Rare photo of Princess Diana from her school days

On the occasion of the release of his memoir A Very Private School, Charles Spencer looks back on his school days with his sister Princess Diana.

A few days ago, the 9th Earl Spencer shared a childhood photo dating back to 1968. The photo shows the two brothers in red uniforms, which was taken on a milestone day in his education, at the age of 4.

“My first day at school, September 1968: my father took this picture of me and my sister, Diana, just before he took us to Silfield, a really lovely school in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. The principal was Miss Jean Lowe, a warm and thoughtful lady who loved her boys and girls,” she captioned the photo on Instagram. “I was there until 1972, when I went to what I call – in my memoirs – A very private school,” he added.

The photograph:

He was referring to Maidwell Hall, the boys’ boarding school where Spencer, now 59, attended from the ages of eight to 13. The historian confronts the childhood traumas he suffered there in his book A Very Private School, revealing for the first time that he was a victim of physical, verbal and sexual abuse at the school.

“I always felt like I had dealt with that chapter of my life and put it well in the back of my mind,” she told PEOPLE. “But talking to my classmates and hearing their experiences was very emotional for me. I was shocked by the horror of what they had shared. And that was the hardest part.”
