The Kingdom of Morocco ranked 65th globally in the energy transition index for the year 2024, included in a recent report issued by the World Economic Forum, measuring the performance of 120 countries in the field of energy transition, topping the Maghreb region, while Tunisia came in second place in the 89th Maghreb globally, followed by Algeria ranked 91st, while Mauritania and Libya were absent from the list.
Regarding the Middle East and North Africa region, Qatar topped the list after coming in 50th place globally, followed by the United Arab Emirates, which came in 52nd place, then the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which was placed in 58th place by the aforementioned index, while the Sultanate of Oman ranked 62nd.
Globally, Sweden topped the index list, followed by Denmark and Finland, which came in second and third place, respectively, while the Democratic Republic of the Congo bottomed the ranking after coming in the 120th place.
The World Economic Forum report recorded progress in relying on clean energy sources at the global level, despite its confirmation that the geopolitical tensions taking place in a group of regions in the world pose major risks to global energy security and slow down the pace of the energy transition, as well as hinder international cooperation. At this level, pointing to the persistence of regional and regional disparities regarding the energy transition.
The same source pointed out that “the unrest resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic and the war between Russia and Ukraine led to a global energy crisis and a rise in inflation rates and interest rates between 2022 and 2023,” stressing that the rise in energy costs poses major obstacles to achieving the energy transition in many countries. of emerging countries and economies.
The report noted that 107 countries out of the group of countries included in the index showed progress in the field of energy transition over the past decade, highlighting at the same time that “artificial intelligence represents a great opportunity for governments and energy companies, as they can now enhance global energy security and provide new investment opportunities in this field”.
