Radiology Up-to-date: “Modern medicine is interdisciplinary and individual.” – 2024-04-22 15:01:45

Vienna (OTS) On Friday, April 26th and Saturday, April 27th, 2024, the Vinzenz Group congress days for the radiology and nuclear medicine departments will take place in the Albert Hall Conference Center in Vienna. 30 international experts are dedicated to radiological diagnostics in the treatment of cancer on the one hand and interventional radiology on the other. Participation is free, registration is required.

Radiology has been part of medicine since Wilhelm Röntgen made his groundbreaking discovery of “X-rays” in 1895, which revolutionized medicine. Since then, medical treatment methods have continuously improved and radiological diagnostics have also become increasingly important. In addition to the ever-increasing diversity of radiology applications, the technology is also constantly developing. “Imaging procedures are becoming more and more precise, diagnostic accuracy is increasing and so the quality of treatment for patients is constantly improving,” emphasizes Congress President Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schima. “Continuous training and close interdisciplinary exchange are therefore our mission at this two-day congress,” says Schima. The internationally recognized radiologist works successfully in three specialist clinics of the Vinzenz Group, the Divine Heiland Hospital Vienna, the Barmfühle Sisters Hospital Vienna and the St. Josef Hospital Vienna.

What’s new in radiology

The two days of the congress will focus on two sets of topics: on the one hand, the importance of radiology for the treatment of cancer and, on the other hand, the radiological, image-based treatment methods. This interventional radiology is minimally invasive and often saves patients from major surgical procedures.

Individual treatment of cancer

Radiological imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients affected by cancer. With its procedures, radiology makes a decisive contribution to increasing the chances of recovery and ensuring the best possible quality of life for those affected. Diagnosis, therapy and follow-up are hardly conceivable without imaging using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computer tomography (CT) or positron emission tomography and computer tomography (PET/CT) in cooperation with nuclear medicine and radiology. Radiological and nuclear medicine imaging is now the key to personalized medicine. Compared to the very standardized treatments that were previously used, “personalized” treatment concepts are now increasingly being used, in which the treatments are tailored precisely to the exact characteristics of the individual patient’s tumor condition. The experts deal in detail with colon, breast and prostate cancer as well as esophageal and stomach cancer. Overall, these forms of cancer are responsible for a significant proportion of cancer-related deaths in Austria.

Successful use of interventional radiology

In the field of interventional radiology, the experts deal specifically with vascular surgery: The focus is on the interdisciplinary treatment of aortic aneurysm, the enlargement of the main artery, and peripheral occlusive disease (also known as “intermittent claudication”), a circulatory disorder in the legs. In addition, various new procedures such as prostate artery embolization (PAE) for urology will be presented. Since around the age of 60 every second man suffers from a benign enlargement of the prostate, this leads to an increased and very unpleasant urge to urinate. With the help of the radiological procedure, the blood supply to the prostate is restricted, so that this organ permanently shrinks and thus relieves micturition problems.

Interdisciplinary & individual

“Modern medicine is interdisciplinary and requires the interaction of all specialist areas,” said Congress President Wolfgang Schima, who thanked all participants for their daily commitment. “This is the only way we can offer modern and individual treatment concepts for our patients.”

Profile:
Born in Vienna, Wolfgang Schima studied medicine at the Medical University of Vienna and completed his specialist training in radiology at the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). Schima has been working at the Göttlicher Heiland Hospital in Vienna since 2008, and in 2011 he became head of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology in three specialist clinics in the Vinzenz Group, in addition to the Göttlicher Heiland Hospital in Vienna, the Sisters of Mercy Hospital in Vienna and the St. Josef Hospital in Vienna. He is a visiting professor at the Medical University of Vienna and was president of the Austrian X-ray Society (ÖRG) and the International Cancer Imaging Society (ICIS). Further training is very important to him: Schima has organized over 50 congresses and courses for colleagues over the course of his career.
