After all, without coffee we wouldn’t be able to sit in our favorite cafes and make waking up in the morning more pleasant. And it’s not just about that one coffee, i.e. black. Coffee is a relatively old drink. Sometime at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, the Abyssinians in Ethiopia learned to roast, grind and pour water over coffee beans. Their custom then spread very quickly to the Islamic world. They also arose in Constantinople in the 16th century the first predecessor of today’s cafes. At that time, however, they were called “schools of knowledge and learning” and writers, scholars and chess players gathered in them. Thanks to the development of trade, coffee soon reached Europe from there. As early as the end of the 17th century, the Venetians, who at the time considered to be rare medicine. Coffee drinking soon fell so much that the government had to order the number of coffee shops to be cut in half. Coffee did not reach Austria (more precisely, Vienna) until 1683 as part of the booty from the won war with the Turks. It didn’t take long for coffee and cafés to become an integral part of Viennese political and cultural life. Then it was only a matter of a few years before coffee reached our countries.
Every nation has different, sometimes very old, customs and ways of preparing and serving coffee. It’s no secret that it’s still very popular here “Czech Turk”, i.e. ground coffee poured with hot water. However, thanks to the many cafes and coffee machines that many people buy at home, the popularity of espresso and other coffee specialties.
