Mossad chief David Barnea informed the Israeli war cabinet that the Qatari mediator conveyed a message to Israel that Hamas was ready to negotiate a deal for the release of 40-50 hostages, including women, adults and sick, in exchange for a 20-30 day ceasefire and the release of prisoners.
Ynet reports this, citing an Israeli source and adding that Hamas has withdrawn the request it had presented so far for a total ceasefire as a condition for the return of the hostages.
According to the same source, Israel has asked Qatar for clarification, asking for answers by today. A political official commented on the developments, speaking of “a slight progress” even if “the road is still long and it is too early to understand whether or not this will allow negotiations to start to reach a turning point”.
Another security source – writes Ynet – was more skeptical, arguing that “until there is a fundamental change in Hamas regarding the survival of its government and the request for a complete ceasefire, the possibility of reaching an agreement is scarce”.
