The Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM) insisted on the need to implement mechanisms in order to promote the recycling and reuse of waste due to the impact they have on ecosystems, since according to data from the Civil Association Ecology and Business Commitment (ECOCE), in Mexico, 120,128 tons of solid waste are generated daily.

It is worth remembering that, in an effort to address the worrying lack of information on waste separation and recycling in Mexico, the Green Party Parliamentary Group in the Chamber of Deputies presented a proposal to reform the General Law for the Prevention and Comprehensive Management of Waste. An initiative that seeks the inclusion of an “environmental label” on the packaging of various products, clearly indicating in which deposit they should be disposed of once their useful life has ended, with the aim of facilitating their correct separation and final disposal.
Representative Nayeli Fernández Cruz, who presented the initiative at the time, pointed out that despite there being laws and regulations that establish the bases for the proper processing of garbage, The lack of knowledge among the population about how to separate correctly is evident. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), only 11 percent of the waste collected in Mexico is divided into organic and inorganic, while the remaining 89 percent is collected non-selectively.
Fernández Cruz also highlighted that the volume of recycled materials in the country is significantly low, reaching only 9.6 percent of the total waste generated in 2015. Comparatively, countries such as South Korea and Germany, members of the Organization for Cooperation and Development Economic Development Organizations (OECD), recycled 58 percent and 47 percent of their waste respectively in the same year.
In this context, The environmentalist representative emphasized the need to promote classification and collection separately from garbage to reduce environmental pollution and promote a culture of recycling and reuse of waste. He stressed that the lack of information about packaging materials makes it difficult to properly separate them, which contributes to the low recycling rate in the country.
The Green proposal not only seeks to reduce environmental pollution rates and prevent damage to human health associated with the proliferation of open landfills, but also promote a culture of garbage separation that facilitates recycling and the reuse of waste in Mexican society.
