Do you get overwhelmed when people ask you what your favorite movie is? We help!
What are movie charts for? According to many, their task is orientation, attention-grabbing, inclusion of works in the canon that are worthy of being known and talked about. This is, of course, a huge mistake. An “all time” movie list its purpose is to indicate how special our taste is and how tightly we keep our finger on the trigger of coolness.. With the list below, we are trying to help those who dare to walk only next to the wall at various social gatherings, fearing that someone will suddenly ask them the question, “And what are your favorite movies?”
There are those who believe that an old film is one in which the actors still use a plain mobile instead of a smartphone, and when they watch such a prehistoric moving relic every leap year, they are proud of themselves for having successfully sacrificed themselves on the altar of high culture. Those who are a little more open-minded are also willing to choose from the classics of the 60s and 70s,
however, only those who have at least one film released 100+ years ago can call themselves a true cinephile.
It is important to show restraint and not choose, say, Georges Méliès A trip to the moon the 1902 sci-fi classic, because even though it would be great for kids, no one would believe that it is really our favorite. We also avoid obvious titles such as Patyomkin is armored or that Gold rushas well as everything that was included in famous lists similar to the “Brussels twelve”. From this point of view, Harold Lloyd’s is a perfect compromise Skyscraper love. It is not as well known as the most famous films of Chaplin or Buster Keaton, but connoisseurs know about it. In addition, one of the coolest stunt scenes of all time can be seen in this production.
Although the rule of thumb is indeed to neglect classic list films, there are special cases. Every ten years since 1952, the patinated British magazine Sight and Sound has voted with film critics, curators and distributors on which are the best films of all time. The list for forty years Orson Welles Golden citizenwas directed by, and in 2012 Alfred Hitchcock’s Dizziness took his place. However, in 2022, to a huge surprise, a film that was not only unknown to the general public, but even among film critics, only black belts came out on top.
Chantal Akerman’s hyper-realistic feminist premise, in which we can watch the daily routine of a widow for 200 minutes, is therefore a perfect choice for our list. It has the stamp of a masterpiece on it, but it’s still considered obscure. By selecting it, we can also indicate our progressiveness, our commitment to feminism, and since many people dispute the legitimacy of the film’s first place on the Sight and Sound list (the votes had to be weighted to arrive at this result),
we can even pat ourselves on the back for our brave stand.
(The film will be presented at the Cirko cinema on September 5.)
Of course, we want to avoid being accused of snobbery, so the list should also include a work that we can use to clearly indicate that for us, not only dramas by Uzbek authors fit into the concept of cinematography, but also, let’s say, action movies dripping with testosterone. THE Ramboa Die Harda Predator or the A deadly weapon it’s out of the question, you need a film that pushes the genre’s clichés to the limit, but despite this – or precisely because of that –
you can admire him ironically.
A Commando just such a classic B-category action movie, in which we can watch for an hour and a half how Schwarzenegger walks through everyone like the Terminator, terrorizing his victims with one-liners that fit into jokes. The production is both bloody serious and (self)parody-worthy frivolous, a Commandowith this, we can also illustrate that we not only understand, but also love the joke.
If we have favorite directors, we are tempted to fill our list with their best ones, but we could not commit a greater abomination than this. The great classics of Spielberg, Coppola, Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Fincher and other big names should be neglected if we don’t want it to seem too basic, but if we still can’t resist touching a cult director, then don’t choose the obvious film from his oeuvre.
In Tarantino’s case, it’s the Jackie Brownhis only novel adaptation that is so Tarantino that it isn’t. Putting it on our list kills two birds with one stone. We can tick off the great director column with it, on the other hand, if we even declare next to it that we think this is Tarantino’s best film, it immediately
we put ourselves in the shoes of the self-righteous, rebellious cultural commentator.
Many people make the mistake of not adding recent films to their lists, implying that a production must stand the test of time before it can begin to be canonized. However, what we want to say with our list is that
our taste is infallible, and we can even pronounce the final verdict on a film shown the day before yesterday.
The Oppenheimer from this point of view, it doesn’t seem like an obvious choice, on the one hand, it won an Oscar, which is the exact opposite of cool, and on the other hand, it was directed by one of the hottest mainstream filmmakers of our time, Christopher Nolan. Please tell us that it is Oppenheimer by far the most artistic-looking piece of Nolan’s oeuvre, a so-called serious film whose inclusion on our list we can stand the Barbie also against the pink consumerism represented byand if someone were to ask about the 7 Oscars, we can safely say that it was included in our list not because of it, but in spite of it. And the fact that we snored so loudly at the Oppenheimer screening that we were spoken to from the other row, no one needs to know.
