Police clashed with activists and supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Clashes broke out when police blocked PTI protests in Pakistan’s major cities to protest the rigging of the February 8 election. On Saturday (March 2), Pakistani media Geo News reported the news.
PTI workers, supporters and lawyers gathered in front of the Lahore High Court as part of the protest on Saturday. Apart from this, PTI supporters occupied various areas including Shahadara, GPO Chowk on Mall Road and outside the commissioner’s office. At one point, the police lathi-charged the protesters. Police arrested 8 more PTI workers including Mia Shehzad Farooq from different areas.
Meanwhile, while protesting in front of the Lahore High Court, the police pushed the lawyers into the court and locked the gates.
Protests are going on in Islamabad and other cities. A PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat is leading the protest rally from Peshawar to Islamabad. Blocked by the police, he changed the route and took the protest march towards Rawalpindi.
The PTI spokesperson said that their peaceful protest was being prevented by the police. People have taken to the streets to take back their stolen mandate. He also said that this fight will continue.
In Islamabad, a rally was held outside the National Press Club led by PTI leaders Shoaib Shaheen, Ali Bukhari and Amir Mughal. Another rally was held in the Rajar Bazar area of the city followed by a protest march around different areas.
PTI held a protest rally in Gujarat led by Kaisara Elahi, wife of former Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi. Sister of PML-Q President Chowdhury Sujat Hussain was present at the rally.
Several political parties, including PTI, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal and Jamaat-e-Islami, rejected the February 8 election results on allegations of rigging. Independent candidates supported by PTI won more than 90 seats. They later joined the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) to get reserved seats for women and minorities. PTI has been protesting election rigging ever since the announcement of the results.
