Vienna (OTS) This must apply both to the treatment of mental illnesses and to support in difficult life situations. The self-authorization of those affected must be maintained without waiting times for additional assessment appointments.

Austria, as the cradle of psychotherapy, is a leader in the development of psychotherapy science. The healthcare profession has been regulated by law for more than 30 years Psychotherapy is also outstanding by international standards makes an important contribution to healthcare. Numerous scientific studies testify to the efficiency and effectiveness of psychotherapy in both prevention and healing. The aim of the new legal regulation of psychotherapy training is to academicize the profession and ensure quality.

“It is a central element of contemporary health policy that the extensive training of psychotherapists goes hand in hand with a strengthening of their areas of competence and their personal responsibility.” Susanne Pointner, Training and Methods Forum ÖBVP

The quality of the professional practice of psychotherapeutic diagnostics and treatment is guaranteed by the competence and high level of responsibility of the professionals, among other things due to the ethical guidelines (liability, obligation to cooperate with other professional groups). The model of selective indication, i.e. the inclusion of medical, psychiatric or clinical-psychological expertise in justified cases or when benefits in kind are used, has proven to be useful and should be retained.

In order to provide good patient care, it is necessary that all professional groups that treat mental illnesses know and can use appropriate diagnostic manuals, procedures and instruments. These skills have been and will be taught in training and applied and supervised in over 1000 practical hours. The specific psychotherapeutic idiographic diagnosis focuses on the specifics of the individual case, starting from the perceived events and based on the relationship between the patient and the treating psychotherapist. It is supplemented by psychiatric or psychological manuals, the application skills of which are part of university and postgraduate training.

“Psychosocial care is far from meeting the needs. The need is great, especially among young people. It would be hoped that all professional groups involved would put special interests aside and make their contribution to good patient care in a cooperative, appreciative and equal manner.” Barbara Haid, ÖBVP President.
