Protection of biodiversity: Madagascar launches an ambitious project of 71.5 million ariary

Six protected areas will be at the center of this Malagasy initiative which consists in betting on climate resilience by preserving biodiversity.

Madagascar has just taken a new step in its fight against climate change via the launch of the climate resilience project by preserving biodiversity. Funded up to 71.5 billion ariary by the African Development Bank (BAD), this five -year program targets six strategic national parks, including Lokobe, Nosy Hara and Andringitra. These sites, true sanctuaries of endemic species that are not found elsewhere, are today weakened by deforestation, bush fires and increasing human pressure.

Concretely, the initiative aims to restore degraded areas, strengthen the governance of protected areas and create resilience mechanisms in the face of climatic vagaries. Beyond conservation, the project aims to directly involve local communities by inclusive ecotourism and sustainable agricultural practices. This, in order to reconcile protection of ecosystems and socio-economic development. If the ambition is there, the success of such an initiative will depend on the capacity of the stakeholders to ensure transparent implementation and to gain the adhesion of local residents, guarantors of the survival of this natural world heritage.
