Las Vegas/Tek.no: There is no doubt that good sound is essential for immersion when, for example, we watch a movie or enjoy a game. It’s even better when we can have bass so intense it makes the whole chair shake, but that can also mean a strained relationship with neighbors or parents.

With “Project Esther,” Razer seeks to give us the opportunity to experience tangible feedback in games without anyone noticing but ourselves. This is done via a “pillow” with 16 different touch fields.

The adjustable straps ensure that the cushion can be attached to the vast majority of standard office or gaming chairs. The signals are taken from the game audio and sent to the pad via USB.

The purpose of having 16 touch fields is that you should be able to hear and feel from which direction, so as not to forget where, you get hit, for example.

Therefore the pillow also covers the thighs, buttocks and back.

Yes, it’s obvious

Adjustable straps ensure the cushion fits most chairs.

We got to try out a one-minute demo of the pad through the game MechWarrior 5, where yours truly got to demonstrate his lack of skill with a hand controller.

At the same time, the Razer representative believes that this is for the best, as the pad in the demo mainly provides feedback when hit. In that sense, then, it wasn’t just about the pain.

In the demo area we could see on a screen which zones were activated during the game.

We thought the haptics worked well so far. It’s not an overwhelming tremor, but it’s clearly felt, just like a little massage. Coupled with good headphones, it definitely helped give more immersion in the game.

In our little minute, we will not claim that it helped determine the direction from which the enemies came, but it is certainly also a question of training.

It may be for sale

The boring thing about “Project Esther” is that the prototype we tested is just that: a prototype. Razer can’t or won’t answer whether this is a product that will actually eventually go on sale, and if so, how much it will cost.

In other words, we just have to wait and see if sooner or later such an important player will appear on the market.
