ENGLISH Prince William and Kate Middleton are hiring. The British royal couple are reportedly looking for new staff with rare skills to help them at Kensington Palace.

The vacancy is for the position of assistant private secretary to help plan and carry out most of Prince William’s public activities and Kate Middleton in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, with a particular focus on Wales.

As reported by Mirror, Tuesday (23/7/2024), the special requirements that must be met by applicants are having at least Welsh speaking skills, with fluency in spoken and written Welsh.

In addition, the secretary will also need to have a strong understanding of Welsh communities, affairs, government and business, along with excellent communication skills and a proven ability to build productive relationships with a wide range of individuals and institutions.

Although only around 891,800 people speak Welsh, or Cymraeg as it is known, the language has surprising links to kingship.

This is because King Charles studied for weeks before his investiture as Prince of Wales in 1969 to master the language out of respect for the country he would be serving.

William and Kate also have a personal connection to Wales, as it was where the eldest son of the late Princess Diana was first stationed as an RAF rescue pilot on the Isle of Anglesey, and where the couple also had their first home after marrying in 2011.
