Primary. First scan to the results

The point of tension, debate and analysis before public opinion was found in the low participation. The quantitative and qualitative achievements in the ruling party and the opposition, where the results for RN, PS, the PC and the Frente Amplio stood out. Some of the results warn of tough competition in several significant communes in the October election.

“The Century”. Santiago. 10/6/2024. 1.-From the perspective of the ruling party plus Christian Democrats (the “Contigo Chile Mejor” pact) and the opposition (the “Chile Vamos” conglomerate and the Social Christian Party), the least noisy but important thing is that they ended up resolving conflicting candidacies in emblematic communes through the primary mechanism and that legitimizes their candidates within their ranks and in view of the municipal election next October.

2.-The point of tension, debate and analysis before the public opinion, was given in the low participation of the electorate identified with the parties of both sectors, including the thousands of militants of around fifteen political parties. 6% is low. Although it increased by around two points from previous municipal primaries. Even in influential communes where the dispute to define the candidacy was cardinal in the political-electoral framework and which will be the most relevant in the October elections, the participation was less than 4 or 3 percent.

3.-There are always two factors in electoral measurements: quantitative and qualitative. In relation to the ruling party, in the first the Socialist Party and the Party for Democracy had their achievement and in the second there was a notable triumph for the Communist Party and the Broad Front, winning the primaries in the most important communes and establishing their candidacies by first time in places where there was another tradition (Antofagasta, La Florida, Valparaíso, Providencia). According to the numbers and objectives, the Christian Democracy (which continues its history of the last decade of not very good electoral results), did not have much to show, except for La Granja. As for the opposition, the quantitative and qualitative achievement was led by Renovación Nacional, achieving successes in very important communes for the right (Los Barnechea, where the UDI competed, and Puente Alto), and a decline was seen but the Democratic Union Independent, suffering significant blows in La Barnechea and La Florida. Evópoli experienced a kind of ghostly presence in these primaries.

4.-Some of the results warn of tough competition in several significant communes in the October election such as Valparaíso, La Florida, Antofagasta, Peñalolén, Concepción. For this reason, despite the low participation, the electoral teams carry out a more detailed analysis to see the prospects, without forgetting, as with the entire process, the element that the October elections will be with mandatory voting.
