Presentation of the book “Exile in Secondary Streets” by Pablo Bravo

  • Fernando Castillo Velasco Auditorium, Lo Contador Campus, Catholic University, 1936 Comendador Street, Providencia.
  • Thursday, October 10 – 6:30 p.m..

This work will be presented in a discussion with the presence of renowned specialists Héctor Soto and Lorena Amaro.

“At Co.incidir Ediciones we have a vocation and an obsession: to publish books that contribute to human development. In this second novel that we are publishing with Pablo Bravo, ‘Exilio en Calles Secundarias’, we want to confirm a solid literary voice that invites us to reflect very seriously on the weaknesses of our society and the human soul itself. The stories are very vivid and for those of us who have lived through all the years covered in this novel, I have no doubt that it will make us reflect on everything that has happened in our country, especially in the last 30 years,” says María Alicia Pino, general editor.

The story tells the tale of a man who leaves Chile because he can’t take it anymore, but what he wanted to escape from finally appears at the doors of his new residence. From this simple premise, the author seeks to unravel a ball of yarn to investigate the underlying stories, which in this case, becomes a choral story.

The author of the novel is journalist Pablo Bravo, who has worked for many years as a magazine editor and who made his fiction debut in 2022 with the novel “Sean Ellos el Grito de Muerte”, also published by Co.incidir Ediciones.

Regarding the greater complexity of this book compared to his previous book, the writer states that “you don’t choose that, the book itself dictates it to you. I realized that an apparently simple story had many ramifications going back. For two or three people to meet, an infinite number of unimaginable unforeseen events must occur. In that sense, it seemed to me that the most honest thing was not to focus on a single character but to do something more choral. And, for that reason, they are different voices and tones, no one person speaks the same as the other.”

From the United States, the draft text was reviewed and commented by the writer Gonzalo Baeza (author of The City of Empty Hotels), who analyzes that “nowadays it is very difficult to find authors who want to write a novel with such complex architecture and a world as vast as the one created here. In mere terms of volume and complexity, most of those who write novels of this magnitude are authors of fantasy literature, but Exile in Secondary Streets has nothing to do with that, its characters are successful creations, and the different perspectives that converge in the story reflect a properly literary view and foreign to the commercial thriller. In short, in this case a solid novel has been achieved, a bildungsroman with something of initiation and river novel. This novel is a healthy dissonant voice in the current sea of minimalism that tells minimal and anemic stories. In fact, it is quite the opposite.”
