Precautions to be taken against fungal infections in summer

Dr. Zahide Sevil Aytekin, a Skin and Venereal Diseases Specialist at Bursa High Specialization Training and Research Hospital, stated that hygiene measures should be taken to avoid exposure to fungal infections, which increase in the summer months.

Aytekin, whose views were included in the statement made by the Provincial Health Directorate, stated that microorganisms that cause fungal infections have a greater ability to reproduce in hot weather.

Aytekin stated that since the sweating function increases a lot, fungal infections occur more in areas that do not receive air, especially in the folds, such as the armpits, groin, between the toes, and hips, and that this can be the case in situations such as frequent washing and not drying well, and continued as follows:

“There are many different types of fungal infections. There are severe ones and more localized ones. We generally prefer medication groups such as creams, sprays and shampoos for fungal infections. In periods when it is very severe, pill treatments may also be on the agenda. Of course, treatments may vary depending on the patient’s age and the status of other medications they are currently using. Treatments generally last 1 or 1.5 months. There are certain precautions that our patients need to take. We also explain these to our patients.”

“Cotton clothes can be preferred”

Aytekin emphasized that increased sweating makes it easier for fungal infections to spread, and that excessive physical activity should be avoided unless necessary.

Aytekin, who emphasized that great attention should be paid to body hygiene, said, “It is very important to clean well and keep dry the areas that are not well ventilated, especially the armpits, groin, hips, and between the toes. It is also important not to share personal belongings, especially slippers, towels, and socks, at home. Other than that, cotton clothing can be preferred. Tight and tight underwear that sticks to the body too much and synthetic fabrics increase sweating, making infections easier to develop.”
