René Lake, administrator of SenePlus.com, has just returned from a three-week trip to Cuba. In his testimony, he paints a brilliant portrait of the island and its people.
Traveling across the country from west to east, from Havana to Santiago via Matanzas, Varadero, Cienfuegos and Trinidad, René Lake says he managed to get “a good idea of Cuban reality”. According to him “it is an absolutely extraordinary country”.
What struck him most was “the dignity, the upright posture of the Cubans, a great pride in their history”, especially the 1959 revolution led by Fidel Castro. Today, Cubans are particularly proud to celebrate the 65th anniversary of this great event of the 20th century.
Furthermore, René Lake highlights “an absolutely remarkable level of intellectual and technical awareness”, whether in the field of education, healthcare or even mechanics, a sector in which Cubans demonstrate great ingenuity due to the American embargo.
Another element that marked René Lake: “cleanliness, the cleanliness of cities, the cleanliness of neighborhoods”. According to him, “the country is extremely clean, much cleaner than the cleanest third world country I have ever seen.” He also underlines the state of the roads and the “particularly sophisticated” infrastructure.
Finally, René Lake highlights the “urban aesthetics”, the “cultural harmony” between different communities, particularly in the reclamation of African heritage, as well as the undeniable charm of “Cuban music” that echoes “Senegalese music” .
