Power outages in Amsterdam according to grid operator caused by weather | Domestic

The two major power outages in Amsterdam this week were caused by the recent big change in weather conditions. This is the conclusion of the network operator Liander after investigating the power station where things went wrong both times.

Two major power outages occurred in parts of Amsterdam on Monday and Tuesday. This happened in almost the same area, Liander reports. 68,000 families and businesses were affected on Monday, 57,000 on Tuesday.

The problem was located at a large power station in Hemweg. Liander then investigated the station thoroughly. This shows that in several places things have gone wrong due to “the sharp change in weather conditions in recent times”.

It was very cold some time ago and the temperature has been a little higher for a few days. According to Liander, heavy rains and high groundwater levels caused humidity at the power plant. This would have caused the technical parts to break.

Liander also says the station’s heating system would not have worked properly, which would not have reduced humidity. According to the network manager, the interruption of heating was not the direct cause of the fault, but was “part of a combination of factors”.
