The power outage in the Balkans brought life to a halt. According to the statements made by officials from the countries in the region, the electricity distribution system was almost completely out of service in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro due to malfunction. Power outages were also seen in some parts of Croatia and Albania.

Sasa Mujovic, Minister of Energy and Mining of Montenegro, said in his statement to the press that the cause of the malfunction in the electrical system was overload due to increased electricity use due to high air temperature. In the statement published by the Montenegrin Electricity Distribution System (CEDIS), “Almost all of Montenegro was left without electricity due to the supply in the grid.” It was said.

TRAM AND TROLLEYBUS SERVICES STOPPED IN SARAJEVO

While traffic lights were out of service due to the nationwide outage in Bosnia and Herzegovina, many businesses had to suspend their activities. Tram and trolleybus services stopped in the capital Sarajevo. Officials in Bosnia and Herzegovina stated that the power outage that affected the region started with a problem in the power grid in Montenegro. In the statement published by Bosnia and Herzegovina’s public electricity service provider Elektroprivreda, it was stated that the cause of the power outage was a transmission line failure in the region and that this failure also affected the electricity system in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

COPS ARE ALARMED

The power outage was also effective in certain regions of Croatia, especially the Dalmatian coast. Croatia also wrote that the malfunction in the electricity system started in Montenegro and that the outage affected Montenegro, then Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. A large number of police officers were sent to the field in Split, Croatia, due to traffic lights being out of service. When those caught in the power outage in the shopping malls returned to their vehicles en masse, a traffic jam occurred in the garages of the shopping malls.

ALBANIA WAS ALSO AFFECTED

In Albania, outages occurred in many cities, including the capital Tirana, Durres, Shkodra and Saranda. After the outage, which started around 12.20 local time, electricity was gradually restored to various regions within about an hour.
