Portugal becomes the largest exporter to Angola, and China the importer

In the first quarter of 2017, China maintained its status as Angola’s largest importer, mainly oil, but gave up the place of honor as the largest exporter in the same period to Portugal, an official source said yesterday.

According to the report from the National Institute of Statistics, Beijing attracted 62.6 percent of Angolan sales, some four thousand 300 million euros, which meant a growth of 97 percent compared to the last quarter of last year.

India came in second place with 6.5 percent, or 457 million euros and South Africa was third with 4.1 percent of the share (289 million euros).

In general, business volume decreased from January to March, particularly in China, which lost a fifth of its offers to the African country’s market.

Portugal increased its sales to Luanda by 40 percent, but its volume decreased by 4.3 percent. Nevertheless, it accounted for 18.8 percent of Angolan purchases, equivalent to 482 million euros.

China had a share of 11.5 percent and, as a new addition, the United Kingdom came in third, with eight percent.

In terms of charges, Angola received one million 516 thousand 748 tons, which meant a drop of 5.13 percent compared to the same period in 2016, reported the National Shippers Council.
