“Porto Alegre is practically at a standstill,” Melo says after the storm

Mayor Sebastião Melo asked people not to leave their homes this Wednesday. The request comes after the storm that hit Porto Alegre last night, recording 76 millimeters of rainfall, more than half the average expected for January. “Whoever can stay at home should do so, because the city is practically at a standstill”, he recommended.

On social media, the head of the municipal council also called for speed in restoring power. “Since the management of CEEE Equatorial has not answered the phone in the last few hours, we are making an appeal for someone from the company to be present at the CEIC and assist us in the joint governance to resume normality. There is no water supply without energy.”

Five purification plants (Etas) of the municipal Department of Water and Sewerage (DMAE) are paralyzed due to lack of energy. There are also 11 pumping stations without electricity. The problem also affects the Emergency Hospital, the Clinical Hospital, the Institute of Cardiology, the IAPI Health Center and the emergency room of Vila dos Comerciários.

According to Melo, the lack of energy affects 1.2 million people and there is still no CEEE Equatorial position on the return of electricity. “Our city is resilient and will get through this difficult time,” she said.
