PNV and PSOE seal an agreement in the Basque Country

PNV and PSOE have reached a preliminary government agreement for the legislature, a month and a half after the autonomous elections in the Basque Country on April 21. This basic agreement was announced late on Monday afternoon, just ten days before the investiture plenary session in the Basque Parliament, on June 20, in which the PNV candidate, Imanol Pradales, will be elected lehendakari.

The document Bases for the agreement to advance well-being, progress, self-government and the transformation of a global Euskadi Negotiations began on April 29 and have been sent to the Executives of both parties for ratification. The militancy of the PSOE and the National Assembly of the PNV must approve the document to reissue the coalition agreement of the recently concluded legislature. One of the key points of the agreement is the need to negotiate a new “statutory pact” both in the Basque Country and with the State, for future self-government. After its approval in the Cortes Generales, the new Basque statute would be put to a vote by the “Basque people” for ratification.

The agreement also focuses on energy transformation and sustainability, establishing as priorities moving towards “carbon neutrality” and improve the energy autonomy of the Basque Country. It is committed to sustainable mobility in public transport, a circular economy that reduces the consumption of raw materials and an urban agenda for 2050.

Finally, PNV and PSOE commit to complete the development of the current Statute of Gernika, pointing out that around thirty subjects have not yet been transferred to the Basque Government. Furthermore, the programmatic agreement is seen as essential to building the “Euskadi of the future”, improving the well-being of citizens, guaranteeing progress and social cohesion, and deepening the unique system of self-government through a new statutory pact.
