JAKARTA – PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) in collaboration with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government processes waste into Solid Fuel Jumputan (BBJP) as a substitute for coal in PLTU. This collaboration not only helps to solve the problem of urban waste, but also produces biomass that can reduce emissions in power plants.

The cooperation marked by the signing of the MoU in June 2023 has entered the stage of implementing the study and feasibility study related to the input of waste at TPS 3R Pesanggrahan into BBJP and will then be signed a cooperation agreement. Through this cooperation, the waste entering TPS Pesanggrahan, most of which is organic residential waste, will be reduced into materials with economic value.

“As an entity tasked with ensuring the supply chain of raw materials for power plants, PLN EPI continues to carry out various innovations to support the government in reducing carbon emissions and increasing the circular economy,” said PLN EPI President Director Iwan Agung Firstantara in Jakarta, Tuesday (13/8/2024).

Iwan explained that co-firing technology is a cutting-edge breakthrough that is not only able to reduce the problem of urban waste, but also contributes to reducing emissions in power plants by replacing the use of coal with biomass. “In the implementation process later when commissioning begins, a trial will be carried out at the nearest PLTU, namely the Lontar PLTU in Tangerang. Later, some will also be coordinated again. This means that products other than BBJP can be off-taken by the cement industry around Jakarta,” he explained.

Vice President of Production and Biomass Supply Chain of PLN EPI Erfan Julianto added that the implementation of the trial and commissioning is planned to be carried out at the end of December 2024, or January 2025. “Currently, we are carrying out the procurement tender process, there are administrative stages, technical evaluations, we estimate that signing the contract for the prospective work implementation will be carried out in early September, then fabrication and construction activities will be approximately 3 months,” he explained.

From the power plant side, Erfan said, good waste management can be a source of profit. In this case, he explained, PLN EPI utilizes waste into biomass with a circular economy concept. Most agricultural, plantation, and wood industry waste can be used as fuel. “Thus, waste can have economic value and become additional income for people who are able to manage and utilize it properly,” he said.

Erfan added, PLN EPI opens up opportunities for cooperation as widely as possible for district/city governments throughout Indonesia in building a circular economy. “Whether it is through biomass planting on critical land, management of plantation, agricultural and wood waste, or BBJB urban waste for co-firing power plants,” he said.

Related to that, Fahmi from the DKI Jakarta Environmental Service in the PSLB3 sector said, collaboration like the one with PLN EPI is very much needed. “The government, private business entities, and the community need to collaborate to manage waste from upstream to downstream. Thus, waste management can run well,” he said.
