After 20 days of treatment, his family discovered that he had used a sharp knife to cut his hand and was bleeding. Nam was transferred by first aid medical staff to a surgical department to treat his injuries, then transferred to a mental health hospital for further treatment.

Adjustment disorder (AD) is characterized by an emotional response to a stressful event. Usually, stressors involve problems that change the patient’s living conditions.

Stress is considered a direct factor of adaptation disorder; without stress, this disorder would not occur. Adjustment disorders often appear after one or more traumatic factors, but do not necessarily appear immediately after the trauma.

Traumatic factors in adjustment disorders are common life events such as: experiencing childhood stress, broken family, parents’ divorce… Or problems with changing circumstances. , such as retiring, having children or going away to school, or experiencing adverse situations, such as losing a job, losing a loved one or having financial problems.

The pathology of adjustment disorders varies depending on the severity of the traumatizer and the predominant symptoms.

“Currently the prevalence is estimated at 2 to 8% of the general population, with women being diagnosed with this disorder twice as often as men.”“, Dr. Tam said and said that in adolescents, men and women are diagnosed with this disorder equally. The disorders can occur at any age but are often diagnosed in adolescents.

10 to 30% of mental health outpatients and up to 50% of general hospital inpatients referred for mental health consultation have a diagnosis of adjustment disorder.

To prevent adaptive disorders, Dr. Tam believes that it is necessary to follow the 5 R’s principle to help reduce stress. Specifically:

– Recognition: Identify the causes and sources of stress, educate and raise awareness.

– Relationships: Seeking help, support, reassurance.

– Removal: Eliminate stressors and stimulating factors.

– Relaxation: Relaxation through techniques such as meditation, massage, breathing exercises.
