Even though we are becoming increasingly aware of the negative consequences of plastic on health and the climate, plastic bottles continue to be popular. Around 1 billion plastic bottles with a capacity of less than one liter are sold in the Netherlands every year. Many of these bottles, 58% according to the NOS, do not end up at collection points but, for example, on the street. Furthermore, producing plastic requires a lot of fossil fuels, which is also bad for the environment.
Hormonal destruction
Not only bottled water, but also plastic bottles themselves have health consequences. These contain the chemical BPA, which ensures that the plastic becomes flexible. BPA is also a hormone-disrupting substance and behaves in the body very similarly to the natural hormone estrogen. At worst, too much estrogen can lead to infertility, but it also causes annoying everyday ailments such as weight gain, reduced libido and mood swings.
It’s clear that you want as little micro- and nanoplastics and BPA in your body as possible. Also for the sake of the environment, it is better to leave plastic bottles on the shelves from now on. Better to choose these alternatives.
Sustainable reusable plastic bottles
You probably know Dopper. This water bottle is stylish, durable and dishwasher safe. The bottle also comes with a practical cap that can be used as a glass. Although the Dopper is made of plastic, this does not mean that the bottle contains harmful substances. On the contrary. For the Dopper, PP and ABS are used: plastic variants free from BPA and other plasticizers. This bottle has no effect on your hormones. You pay 13.95 euros for a standard Dopper.
Bottles made with materials of plant origin
The Be O bottle is made from sugar cane and therefore completely BPA-free. The bottle is also dishwasher safe and, thanks to its design, easy to transport (you can hang it, for example, on your trousers or bag). The great thing about the Be O Bottle is that it is completely recyclable and you can purchase individual parts of the bottle. If a part is broken, you do not need to immediately buy a new one. So sustainable! A Be O Bottle costs 16.95 euros. For the sportsmen among us: the Retulp brand produces water bottles from sugar cane.
Stainless steel bottles
Stainless steel bottles are becoming more and more popular. Not only do they look great, but the biggest benefit is that the water in the bottle stays cold (or hot) longer. You can even take stainless steel bottles with you on the go without worries, because stainless steel bottles are the least fragile of all materials. The Waterdrop starts at 20 euros and is available in all kinds of fun colors and patterns. Or choose the equally trendy Say What Bottle (24.95 euros), also available in all the colors of the rainbow.
Glass bottles
Ok, they’re a little less practical (because they’re fragile), but glass water bottles are perhaps the most elegant of all reusable bottles. See, for example, this cheerful bottle from the Neon Kactus brand. Since the bottle is packaged in a thermal cover, it will not break easily. The characteristic hood is made of bamboo. Glass is much less permeable than plastic, so it does not absorb flavors and odors. So your water remains wonderfully fresh in taste. For a bottle of Neon Kaktus you pay 22.95 euros.
