Local residents and organizations opposing the redevelopment plans for the Soestdijk Palace in Baarn have been vindicated by the Council of State. He decided on Wednesday that the plans would not go ahead and that the zoning plan would need to be reviewed.

The new owner, MeyerBergman Erfgoed Groep, wanted to transform the former residential palace of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard into luxury apartments, a hotel and restaurant facilities.

Local residents and environmental organizations are against the plans and have lodged objections. Among other things, they fear nuisance and damage to the peculiarity of the 350-year-old estate. There has been a lot of discussion especially about apartments because, according to opponents, too much nature is lost in this way.

The municipality of Baarn describes the cancellation of the master plan by the Council of State as “a great disappointment”. The municipality cannot yet say what exactly the Supreme Administrative Court’s ruling will mean for the future of the site. “The Municipality will study the sentence in the coming days to define the next steps, which will be discussed with all those involved”.

In 2022 the Baarn city council approved the zoning plan by a large majority. This outlines the main lines within which the heritage can be developed. But thanks to the opposition, the MeyerBergman Heritage Group can no longer carry out its plans. The property owner says he “did not expect the State Council’s decision at all” and considers it “a shame” that the elaborate plans will not be implemented.

The Dutch Working Group on Birds of Prey and the Eemvallei Conservation Foundation are pleased that the State Council has canceled the zoning plan. Environmental organizations are two of the eleven opponents who contested the Baarn Municipality’s plan because they feared, among other things, that it would harm nature. Now that they have been proven right, they hope the estate will be given a different purpose that has less impact on the environment.
