Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Friday lamented the crash of a plane carrying 62 people in the interior of the state of São Paulo and called for a minute of silence for the victims.
The Brazilian president learned of the accident while he was preparing to give a speech at an event in the municipality of Itajai, in the state of Santa Catarina, and interrupted the event to express his regret.
“I have to be the bearer of very bad news and I would like to ask everyone to stand for a minute of silence. “A plane has just crashed in the city of Vinhedo, in São Paulo, with 58 passengers and 4 crew members and it seems that everyone died,” Lula told those present.
The video with the statement was published by the president on social media, where he also offered his solidarity to the families and friends of the victims.
The plane, a twin-engine ATR-72-500 model from the Voepass airline, was flying between the city of Cascavel and São Paulo.crashed in a residential area in the municipality of Vinhedo.
According to the airline, it is not yet known how the accident occurred or what the current situation of the passengers is.
Seven firefighting teams were called to the scene, according to the local fire department, which also did not clarify whether there were any casualties.
