MILAN – There are several places in Earth which has rules against “death”. However, it’s important to understand that these bans don’t mean they actually want to stop people from dying.

As reported by IFL Science, the reasons behind these regulations are varied, and are usually more symbolic or to draw attention to certain issues.

Longyearbyen, Norway: In this city located in Svalbard, Norway, permafrost or eternally frozen ground means that buried bodies will not rot. This raises concerns about health risks if viruses or bacteria from decomposing corpses melt.

Therefore, since the 1950s, people who died in Longyearbyen had to be cremated and their remains taken to mainland Norway.

Sellia, Italy: In 2015, the mayor of Sellia issued an ordinance prohibiting people from “getting sick” and “dying” in his city area. These regulations are intended to combat depopulation by encouraging healthier lifestyles and reducing the burden on local health care systems. Although these regulations sound extreme, they are simply a creative way to increase public awareness.

Villages in France: In 2000 and 2008, two villages in France, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Castelnau-Montratier, prohibited their residents from dying because they could no longer expand their cemeteries. This was done as a form of protest to the local government to urge a solution to the problem.

Biritiba Mirim, Brazil: In 2005, the Brazilian island of Biritiba Mirim banned death for the same reasons as villages in France. The island has limited burial space, and the local government cannot expand it.

Falciano del Massico, Italy: In 2012, the Italian town of Falciano del Massico banned death for financial reasons. The city’s cemetery is almost full, and the local government does not have the funds to build a new one.

It’s important to note that even if these regulations are in place, nothing will actually stop people from dying. This regulation is intended to draw attention to problems such as depopulation, public health, and infrastructure limitations.

So, while there are technically places on Earth where death is “forbidden,” this prohibition should not be interpreted literally. This ban is a creative way to highlight the real problems facing local communities.
