“The pregnancy went well, but shortly after giving birth, Emilka began to have epileptic convulsions and apathy. An ambulance took us to the hospital, and that day we learned that the little girl was fighting for her life,” Mrs. Lucie remembers the quick transport to the hospital, where Emilka was subsequently put into artificial sleep.
Brain tumor
Although the doctors were not able to establish Emilka’s diagnosis exactly, it was clear that it was one of the types of brain tumor, so they arranged for her to be transferred to the Motol University Hospital in Prague.
In Prague, the doctors immediately put Emilka on a 14-day biological treatment, after which her condition improved, so they started planning the first operation. “Emilka was not even 4 months old when she underwent her first head surgery. In the end, she had to undergo four of these operations in order for the doctors to be able to remove the entire 8-centimeter tumor that she had there.” her mother describes, adding that in addition to all this, Emilka had to undergo 18 cycles of chemotherapy.
It was endless days of fear for the family, when they didn’t know if Emilka would make it. “We’ve been calling her a fighter ever since, because she clearly decided not to give up. Even the crazy chemo treatments she handled fairly well. She was crying, in pain, whining, angry… But there was nothing to be surprised about, she must have been really sick. Sometimes she vomited, she had crazy diarrhoea, which must have been incredibly difficult for such a small baby.” continues Mrs. Lucie.
The treatment worked
Currently, perhaps Emilka has the worst of it behind her. “We are finally home. She has improved a lot, but she still has problems with her right hand, she does not have the strength to kneel on all fours, lean on her hands and make any movement. His back is still weak, so he can’t even sit up.” Mom explains.
Because the family is dealing with such a serious illness, the Good Angels also help them with regular monthly contributions through the Good Angel Foundation. “I am currently on parental leave, so all the financial burden is on my husband, who is an electrician. But the costs are high, because Emilka had big problems with food for a long time, she didn’t want it.
I bought different brands of specialty milk, which wasn’t exactly cheap until we figured out which one Emilka liked. We also use the contributions of the Good Angels for transport to the doctors and small joys for her, so that she can forget at least a little about the bad times during chemotherapy. We are very grateful to the good angels for this. They really make the situation easier for us,” adds Mrs. Lucie.
