The U.S. Congress will have a commission dedicated exclusively to studying the politics of El Salvador. Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz announced the creation of the El Salvador caucus in the House of Representatives. Gaetz will be the group’s president, while the Democrat from the 34th congressional district of Texas, Vicente González, will be the co-president.

“The mission of the Congressional Caucus on El Salvador will have the objective of promoting a better understanding of the issues related to the United States’ relationship with El Salvador, our mutual interests, and the interests of the United States. It will also work to promote the education of other members and their constituents on these issues, and to strengthen bilateral relations between the United States and our Central American neighbor,” the Republican who represents Florida’s 1st district published in a statement.

Gaetz proposes using El Salvador as a benchmark for achieving the “great rejuvenation” of the United States that will lead the nation to once again be a benchmark in security and prosperity. “The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has transformed El Salvador from the murder capital of the world into a reliable and stable partner for peace and security for the United States of America. The El Salvador caucus will exist to nurture and advance the relationship between the United States and El Salvador in order to foster strong borders, a strong culture, and the strong reforms that President Bukele has put in place,” acknowledged Gaetz, who attended President Bukele’s inauguration.

The second vice president of the Legislative Assembly, Alexia Rivas, stated that this announcement within the United States Congress is important for the bilateral relationship.

“I would invite my colleagues in the House of Representatives and the Senate to become members of the El Salvador caucus as we strengthen the relationship between the United States and El Salvador and work to amplify some of the good decisions that President Bukele and his government are making,” the congressman said. Gaetz and other US lawmakers attended the inauguration ceremony on June 1. The White House sent a high-level delegation for that day, representing different aspects of the administration.

Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security, led President Joe Biden’s nominees. He was joined by Ambassador William Duncan, Marisa Lago (Assistant Secretary for International Trade), Brian A. Nichols (Deputy Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs), Julieta Valls Noyes (Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration), and Daniel P. Erikson (Special Advisor to President Biden).
