Thunberg and other Extinction Rebellion activists were placed in a police bus while police continued to detain other protesters, an AFP reporter observed.
Thunberg had previously walked with several hundred protesters from the center of The Hague to the countryside near the A12 motorway.
This highway had been blocked by activists during previous Extinction Rebellion protests. Police then used water cannons and arrested many protesters.
However, on Saturday, the police stopped the group of protesters, warning that decisive methods could be used to prevent the blocking of the highway.
A confrontation developed between the police and the protesters. Some protesters carried Extinction Rebellion flags, others carried placards reading “Stop fuel subsidies now” and “The planet is dying”.
Some protesters, however, blocked an important road adjacent to the highway.
