In the Dutch second division, Willem II leads the table during the winter break. Peter Maes (59) has been at the helm since mid-September. Maes feels reborn since he managed to put an end to a turbulent period in Tilburg. “I’m very happy that I wasn’t left bitter.”
Peter Maes has been out of work since September 2021 following his exit from Beerschot. Maes was also involved in the football scandal and reached a settlement with the court last summer.
“I had to wait a long time for an opportunity. I thought: is the coach in me still capable of coming back?”
“I did a lot and took courses at the VDAB, but I always heard the little voice that said I wanted to have another chance,” Maes tells our radio colleagues.
This also happened with Willem II, who captured him in September. “The last few months have been very tough. I had to go from 0 km/h to 150 km/h. I’m no longer the youngest and I had to reinvent myself as a coach.”
In Belgium I was completely written off and therefore I want to prove the opposite. This is how I approach life.

Successfully, because Maes is in the lead with Willem II. In 14 games he has lost once and his team has drawn once. “I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun.”

Peter Maes might have opted for a quiet autumn with his family and grandchildren, but the nature of the beast…
“I am very happy that I was not left bitter. My family is proud and happy. They have lived the last 5 years intensely.”

The objective is obviously promotion to the Eredivisie. “But I’ve also put it into perspective and I know where I come from. I no longer have ambitions to work at a top club. Above all, I want to have fun.”
