Peru reaches 55% of the country’s energy matrix
Peru is taking important steps towards a sustainable energy transition, with the aim of reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and mitigating the impact of climate change. Currently, the country reaches 55% participation of renewable energies in its electrical matrix, exceeding the global average.
Globally, CO2 emissions are expected to be halved by 2030, in order to avoid the increase in climate adversities such as heat waves, floods and disastrous droughts. In this context, the energy transition is presented as a successful response to the environmental challenges facing Peru.
Many countries have considerably increased the use of renewable sources in their electricity generation. In the case of Peru, renewable energies such as solar and wind represent almost 8% of total electricity generation, exceeding 55% of the country’s energy matrix.
Experts point out that this energy transition not only benefits the environment, but also has the potential to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life of Peruvians.
“An energy transition managed in an orderly manner – designed ad-hoc for the region – would result in greater demand for jobs in the national industry,” said Roberto Tamayo, former director general of Electricity of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem).

The implementation of renewable technologies would require professionals trained in the installation, maintenance and development of these infrastructures, generating new, higher training profiles in the labor market. In addition, there is the possibility of promoting development in the industry by attracting investment from abroad.
Expo Energy Peru 2024
In this sense, this year the 12th edition of Expo Energía Perú 2024 will take place, an event that will allow the exchange of experiences, lessons and learnings on how other markets are building and going through their energy transition process.
The energy transition in Peru represents an opportunity for sustainable growth and development, while contributing to the mitigation of climate change. With a goal of halving CO2 emissions by 2030, the country is moving towards a greener and more resilient future.
