New trend: Perfect: stars and influencers create chaos
Everything perfectly staged? How boring! Fashion now focuses on chaos and a new and chaotic wind is blowing on Instagram too. This is what’s behind it.

This year you will see a lot of chaos staged. It’s already quietly crept into your Instagram feed and onto magazine covers. Haven’t noticed yet? We show what lies behind the tendency towards chaos and why it should be treated with caution.
Fashion for 2024 is described in a recent Guardian article as a time of “fashion chaos”. The idea of perfection is abandoned, instead a look that appears messy and authentic is preferred.
Chaotic or well thought out?
Suddenly overfilling your bag is chic. Because he proves it on the Miu Miu catwalk. Models appearing on the catwalk with overflowing bags create chaos.
But when you look closer, you realize that the chaos consists of just a single high heel sticking out and a pair of designer pants stuffed into the bag. All perfectly staged, that is.
Almost everything on the Miu Miu runway is out of pocket. Or not?

Confusing scenes with the Kardashians
Even on the covers of major fashion magazines you suddenly see things that don’t match at all. “GQ” shows Kim Kardashian with greasy hair and eating chips on the front page. She is wearing an oversized designer dress and licking her thumb.
If you look closer, the question arises: how did the mega star fish out the chips from the bag using only his thumb? Because it’s the only one that’s apparently covered in chip seasoning.
Kylie Jenner suddenly sits on the floor and eats a hamburger for the Wall Street Journal.

And her sister Kylie Jenner is already part of the chaos trend. She posed for the Wall Street Journal sitting on the floor with a hamburger and a can of Coca-Cola. She wears the newly launched lei Khy brand from head to toe. Authentic? Alright. A burger stop on the floor isn’t exactly for the billionaire.
Behind the seemingly chaotic scene lies a well-elaborated plan complete with simulated disorder. In a magazine shoot, this may be intentional and there is an artistic concept behind it, but now influencers give you the illusion of chaos even on social media platforms.
“Your random photos are so embarrassing”
The aesthetic of chaos is reflected online, where well-lit photos are replaced with blurry shots of smeared plates and wine-stained tablecloths. This is demonstrated, for example, by the Instagram photos of the entrepreneur and influencer Emma Chamberlain.
He regularly posts several photos on Instagram that appear to be randomly put together. Sometimes you see the influencer in bed, sometimes the photos are completely blurry or document the mess on the dining table.
Influencer Emma Chamberlain likes to look blurry.

But in the comments there are comments like: “Your random photos are so embarrassing.” Or to a painting in which you see butter next to the paint: “Have you painted with butter?”

Criticism of the tendency towards chaos
Content creator Camille Charrière also shares chaotic-looking images on Instagram. For example, you can see a table with two coffee cups and a Prada bag. In the photo collection there is also a photo of used napkins and one in which the influencer, caught in the rain, looks sadly into the camera and holds her purse in the camera. Other photos show her at the Prada fashion show which took place on the day of the post.
Striking: the creator of the content only marked the brand of the bag; in all the photos she wears Prada looks. The staged chaos is probably used here to advertise the luxury bag as authentically as possible.
This is also one of the reasons why the tendency towards chaos should be viewed with caution. The lines between truly authentic photos and staged images are increasingly blurred. Seemingly random chaos and casual aesthetics are used by stars and influencers to feign authenticity. The question remains whether blurry posts and greasy fingers lead to more followers in the long term.
