More people around the world are turning away from news, a global study has found. They describe the news as depressing, cruel and boring. British media BBC published a report on Monday (June 17).
According to a report by the Reuters Institute at Oxford University, four in 10 people worldwide say they actively avoid news most of the time. In 2017, this rate was 29 percent. Now it has increased to 39 percent.
Reports of the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East may have played a role in the decline in people’s desire to hear or learn about the news, the report’s authors said.
In January and February of this year’s digital news report, Yugo conducted a survey of 94,943 adults in 47 countries.
According to the report, interest in news has increased in some countries, including the United States, due to the election. But the survey says the overall trend is downward.
46 percent of people worldwide say they are very interested in news. In 2017, this rate was 63 percent. In the UK, interest in news has almost halved since 2015.
Audiences for traditional news sources such as TV and print have declined sharply over the past decade, the report found. Today’s young people prefer to get news online or through social media.
Currently the most important social media platform for news is still Facebook. There is also YouTube and WhatsApp. TikTok is an important news source for many. It has now surpassed the social media platform X.
