Pedro Sánchez will announce this Monday if he continues as president

Pedro Sánchez announced on Wednesday that he would take a few days to reflect on whether he should continue leading the Spanish Government. This decision came after a Madrid court opened an investigation against his wife, Begoña Gómez, for alleged crimes of influence peddling and corruption.

Both in the Government and in the PSOE it is stated that Sánchez will make a decision personally and unrelated to any strategy. This is what he perceives as a campaign of “harassment and demolition” by the PP, Vox, and right-wing and far-right media and organizations, which include attacks on his wife, Begoña Gómez.

The president had announced his need to reflect on his continuity after a Madrid court opened proceedings for the complaint against Gómez for alleged crimes of influence peddling and corruption in business.

The exact time of the appearance and the decision that will be announced remain unknown. No option is ruled out, from its continuity to a possible resignation and the different alternatives that this would imply for the political future of the country.

PSOE support

The PSOE has expressed strong support for Sánchez during its Federal Committee. Converting this from a meeting planned for other purposes into an act of support for the socialist leader. Under the motto “Pedro, stay”, leaders and activists expressed their desire for Sánchez to remain at the head of the Government.

Mobilizations and support

During the weekend, various mobilizations have been carried out in support of Sánchez, both in the streets and among his government partners. The vice president of the Executive, Yolanda Díaz, has supported the continuity of the Government, while from the opposition, Alberto Núñez Feijóo of the PP has criticized Sánchez’s management, regardless of the decision he makes.
