Pascal Broulis, the Romansh who spent the most to be elected

For the first time, during the 2023 elections, a new transparency rule will apply to the campaign financing of those elected to the Council of States. Applicants had until January 4 to send their detailed expenses, if the total amount exceeded 50,000 francs. If they failed to be elected, they were exempt.

According to data calculated by CH Media on the basis of data from the Federal Financial Control, the most expensive campaign was that of the Zurich green liberal Tania Moser (VL/ZH), elected in the second round against SVP Gregor Rutz. In this large canton you spent almost 470,000 francs, but we won’t know how much your defeated opponent spent.

Then it was the president of the RPP, Thierry Burkart, who spent more than 341,000 francs in his canton of Aargau. In third place on the podium we find Pascal Broulis (PLR) from Vaud, who has 287,000 francs at his disposal. Then, further down the rankings, the Freiburger Johanna Gapany (PLR) announced around 160,000 francs and the Valais Beat Rieder (C) not far from 158,000 francs. Then: Carlos Sommaruga (PS, 112,000), Isabelle Chassot (P, 109,000), Marianne Maret (P, 105,000), Pierre-Yves Maillard (PS, 90,500) and Mauro Poggia (MCG, 56,000).
