Parvati Sunar from Nepal who studies in school with her sons

27-year-old Pavarti Sunar from Kanchanpur district of Nepal is a mother of two children. He could not continue his education due to early marriage but now he is studying in the same school with his sons.

Child marriage is illegal in Nepal but is still practiced.

Pavarti Sunar moved to India with her husband after marriage.

He told Reuters news agency: ‘In India I realized the importance of education and realized that education helps to become wise.’

Pavarati is currently studying in class VII and wants to study up to class XII so that she can ‘handle the accounts of her household well’.

She said: ‘I was married at a young age after which I came to India with my husband.’

‘Everybody there spoke English. It was very difficult for me because of my lack of English. It made me want to learn.’

Parvati’s classmates call her Didi. She does schoolwork with her sons and is learning how to use a computer in the evenings at a local internet cafe.

“I help Didi in her studies and she also helps me,” says Bijay KB, a classmate of Pavarti’s. She scolds me when I don’t work.’

In Nepal with a population of 2.9 million, 57% of women are literate.

After school break, Pavarati walks 20 minutes back home with her sons.

Pavarati also does household chores like feeding the goats, cooking and cleaning, after which she completes school work with her sons.

In the evening, she cycles with her son to a local internet cafe where she learns basic computer skills such as typing and using the internet.

After finishing all the work, she talks to her husband Yum on the phone via video chat.

Pawarti belongs to the Hindu Dalit community, which is considered untouchable, but she says she has never faced discrimination on that basis.

Pavarti’s dedication can serve as an example to many Nepali women who are still engaged in housework, away from school and education and face discrimination due to early marriage.
