Parliamentary elections in one of the cities of French New Caledonia failed – 2024-06-30 12:44:57

The first round of the extraordinary parliamentary elections of France was defeated in the polling stations of Wailou commune of New Caledonia.

As Outre-mer La Premiere TV channel reports, unknown persons blocked the entrance to the municipality by setting a car on fire. Because of this, the residents of the commune could not come to vote.

The incident took place at night, and on the morning of June 30, the entrance to the municipality was also closed with a concrete barrier, due to which the municipality continued to remain closed.

According to the source, there are also reports about the blocking of many roads, especially the exit to the village.

Mayor Pascal Sava, as well as the employees of the voting office, could not reach the municipality, which is why the ballot boxes were not installed and the polling station was not opened.

The media noted that there are eight polling stations in this French community. 3766 people were registered in the voter list for the European Parliament elections held in June. During the last legislative elections in 2022, the turnout was 23.72 percent.

The source also informs that on the morning of June 30, around 11 o’clock local time, there was another attempt to attack the local gendarmerie.

The day before yesterday, more than a hundred young people attacked the barracks of the gendarmerie, but the police managed to prevent them from entering the area.
