Panathinaikos was effectively out of the championship race, as it was unable to take advantage of AEK’s defeat by PAOK, after being defeated 1-0 by Aris at Leoforos, in the 8th matchday of the Superleague playoffs.
The Thessalonians were able to find the only goal of the match very early, consequently stressing the Fatih Terim players who could not find the necessary solutions, as they either missed or fell on Questa who was very stable.
The game started perfectly for Aris who in the first phase of the match managed to open the score with an attacker Zamora in the 2nd minute, making it 1-0. Suleimanov turned to Manu Garcia, who took the cross from the edge of the area and Zamora found the net with a fine header. In the 8th minute, Panathinaikos had their first good moment, with Ugo getting a header, but Questas stopped him.
Three minutes later, the Greens threatened again. Cerin switched the ball with Verbic on the edge of the area, got inside and fired, but the ball went narrowly wide. In the 19th minute, Bacachetas took a corner, Hugo got the header, but Brumbetz pushed the ball away which was headed for Cuesta’s goal. At 21′, Aris was close to 2-0. Terrible mistake by Dragovski, the ball slipped out of his hands in an easy phase, but Ugo saved the undefended goal of the Pole from Zamora’s shot. In the 29th minute, Bacachetas committed a foul, found Arao, but he sent the ball over Cuesta’s crossbar. Nothing changed in the final with 1-0 being the half time score.
At the start of the second half, Aris came close to 2-0, having a crossbar with a terrible shot by Zamora from inside the area and a second shot by Garthia in the rebound that went wide. Panathinaikos had the initiative of the moves, but could not create the necessary good moments. In the 69th minute, a shot by Bakaseta from the edge of the area was saved by Questa, while another attempt with a shot from the same height by Kotsira went wide.
In the 71′ cross from Kochira, Geremegev took the header, the ball found Rose’s leg and went towards the goal, but Questa blocked. In the 86th minute, Djuricic’s shot over the bodies, with the ball ending up in Ioannidis who tried another shot, but Questa moved away. The ball never went in and the Thessalonikians left with a big “three points”.
