Nearly five kilometers of irregular steps have been blocked by the authorities from Panama, in the Darien jungle.
These are illegal crossings that are used by migrants from various countries. This in a desire to reach the United States.
Darien is a jungle of more than 500 thousand hectares which is located between the borders of Panama and Colombia.
Panama Border Police barbed wire fences were installed. However, with the help of heavy machinery, these irregular passages were destroyed.
“They were clandestine crossings used by organized crime to move migrants,” said Jorge Gobea, director of the National Border Service of Panama.
Agents installed barbed fences at several points in the jungle near the border with Colombia, where those unauthorized steps were located.
Darien occupies a large part of Panama
In some of these images you can see the fences next to a monolith that delimits both countries, in the middle of lush nature.
Likewise, Gobea announced that they also have more than Seven vessels carrying out coastal blockades.
More than 25 patrols of up to 15 uniformed officers each walk along the length and breadth of the border. This is intended prevent the passage of illegal migrants in this sector of Darien in Panama.
Those who find them are given assistance, food, water and took them to a safe place for place him at the disposal of the authorities.
Migrants say they pay to cross the jungle with “coyotes” in groups, who “abandon” them at some point.
However, on the Panama side of Darien, many of them are victims of violent robberies and sexual assaults, in the case of women.
Panama points out that it is the Gulf Clan, Colombia’s main criminal gang, who crosses migrants irregularly and profits from it.
Last week, Colombian President Gustavo Petro questioned Panama’s decision and warned that blocking these crossings will only lead to “people drowning at sea.”
However, the director of the Panamanian Border Police announced that the closure of these five trails in Darien has reduced the flow of migrants.
“At this time there are less than 9 thousand migrants registered compared to the same day last year,” he said, without giving further details.
The Panamanian government has therefore indicated that it will continue to block these irregular crossings in the Darien jungle.
