Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, has demanded that Palestine be recognized as a full member of the United Nations and has emphasized on a two-state solution to the problem.
Munir Akram, while speaking at the ministerial level discussion titled ‘Middle East situation including the Palestinian issue’ at the United Nations Security Council in New York on Tuesday, said: ‘It is now necessary to ensure the inevitability of a two-state solution. It is time for Palestine to be recognized as a full member of the United Nations.
Since Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel has continued to attack Gaza.
Munir Akram said in this regard: ‘During the last three months, the world has witnessed the most brutal massacre of civilians in the 21st century. More than 25,000 civilians, mostly children and women, have been killed in the Israeli offensive on Gaza. More than two million have been displaced and humanitarian aid has been deliberately blocked by the occupying Israeli army.’
He said: ‘This barbaric killing of innocents and the torture inflicted on the entire population amounts to genocide as stated in the case filed by South Africa at the International Court of Justice.’

Welcoming the diplomatic efforts regarding the two-state solution to the Palestinian issue, Pakistani delegate Munir Akram added that it is the only viable option for the establishment of lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians and between Israel and the Arab and Islamic world.
According to Munir Akram: “Unfortunately, despite the advice of international public opinion and its close allies and many of its own people, the extremist Israeli leadership is determined to continue the brutal war and reject the possibility of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution, which will destroy the Middle East.” will be damaged.
“It is time for the Security Council (for Palestine) to consider such measures for the full membership of the United Nations.”
At the same time, he said: ‘We hope that the Council will finally be able to pass a resolution calling for full humanitarian access to the besieged population of Gaza and international protection for the Palestinian people.’
Munir Akram suggested that this process of peace restoration should be carried out within the framework of the Security Council with the involvement of all concerned states and stakeholders. If the Israeli leadership refuses, then the General Assembly of the Security Council and indeed all member states of the United Nations should take steps to hold it accountable.
He said that there are numerous examples of such measures to comply with the decisions of the Security Council and the General Assembly and these decisions can be taken.
Finally, he said: ‘To ensure the inevitability of the two-state solution, now is the time to admit Palestine as a full member of the United Nations.’
Referring to the council debate, Munir Akram added: ‘Beyond the eloquent words heard in this council debate, we (in Palestine) are looking for concrete measures to stop the massacre of innocents.’
Although many countries of the world, including Pakistan, are in favor of a two-state solution to the Palestinian issue, even US President Joe Biden said in a statement that it is still possible that the Israeli prime minister agrees to the establishment of a Palestinian state in one form or another. However, Binyamin Netanyahu has redoubled his resistance to the idea of a Palestinian state.
Defying pressure from the US government and allies around the world over the future of a Palestinian state, Netanyahu publicly disagreed with US President Joe Biden in a telephone conversation last weekend.
A statement released by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said: ‘In his conversation with President Biden, Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated his policy that Israel must maintain security control over Gaza after the end of Hamas so that it To ensure that Gaza is no longer a threat to Israel. This demand contradicts Palestinian sovereignty.’
