Pakistan responds to attacks, at least nine dead in Iran

At least nine people – among them four children and three women – according to local media, were killed in Pakistani attacks carried out this morning on the Iranian city of Saravan, in the south-eastern province of Sistan and Baluchistan. “We have carried out attacks against anti-Pakistan militant groups inside Iran,” an intelligence source in Islamabad confirmed, adding that the Pakistani government will issue a statement on the matter later today. Two days ago Iran carried out attacks on Pakistani territory against what it called “terrorist targets”.

According to Iranian state TV, two men also died in the attack, in addition to the three women and four children previously announced. Witnesses said on social media that at least seven locations near Saravan – including the villages of Shamsar and Haghabad, and an area near the Saravan base of the Revolutionary Guards – were targeted by Pakistani forces. Iranian media reported that the situation is currently normal in the border areas and trucks are passing through some border stations, such as in Mirjaveh.

This morning’s raids were “highly coordinated and specifically targeted precision military attacks against terrorist hideouts,” Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs was quoted as saying by local media. “This morning’s action was taken in light of credible information regarding imminent large-scale terrorist activities by the so-called Sarmachars,” the Islamabad ministry said in a statement. “A number of terrorists were killed during the intelligence operation codenamed ‘Marg Bar Sarmachar’,” the statement added.

“The incident, which occurred this morning at 4:05 am, involved foreign citizens” from Afghanistan, the province’s deputy governor general, Alireza Mahhamati, said, quoted by the Iranian news agency IRNA.
