Painful sweep for the Algodoneros

Another hesitant start from their starter and failures at bat in two full houses during consecutive innings, condemned the Algodoneros del Unión Laguna to fall last night against the Toros de Tijuana, with a score of 5 runs to 1, so that the Astados would sweep the series played at the Chevron Stadium, in Tijuana, Baja California.

The homeowners got the ball rolling during the close of the second inning, in which Guinda’s starter, right-hander Braden Webb, filled the house after giving up a couple of walks and receiving a hit, in addition to hitting catcher Tres Barrera, with which the Dominican Junior Lake comfortably scored from the third base, the race “of the pool.” The Guindas soon responded, at the opening of the third round, when Nick Torres hit a double to center field and later reached home, driven by a single from Adrián Tovalín, but that was all the damage that the Astados starter allowed, left-hander Matt Dermody.

But at the bottom of the same third inning, Breyvic Valera once again gave the home team the advantage. He walked to start the offense, advanced to second on Braden Webb’s wild pitch, stole third base and scored on a double play. Tijuana finished off the game in the fourth inning. Junior Lake opened the shootout with a double, stole the third base and scored on a bad throw to first base by third baseman Jonathan Villar on a grounder by Jack Mayfield. After the error came Eduardo Díaz to deposit the ball on the other side of the left field fence and give the border team a 1-5 advantage on the scoreboard.

All of the Bulls’ damage came against Guinda starter Braden Webb, who was the losing pitcher. The Algodoneros will open the series tonight against the Acereros, in Monclova.
