Osinergmin once again confirmed that the recent increase in the price of gas cylinders is mainly attributed to the international economic situation.
Since Friday, April 26, there has been a slight increase in the price of domestic gas cylinders, which has caused annoyance in both homes and small and medium-sized businesses. Given the doubts that arose, the Supervisory Body for Investment in Energy and Mining (Osinergmin) issued a statement to clarify the reasons behind this fourth increase.
Impact on millions of homes and businesses
The increase will affect more than seven million Peruvian households and approximately 200,000 small and medium-sized businesses. According to what was reported, the increase in the cost of LPG per 10 kilo cylinder would be S/1.89. Osinergmin emphasized that this variation is mainly attributed to the international situation.
Price regulation and the role of the State
Fuel prices, including LPG, are not directly regulated but are determined by supply and demand. To avoid sudden fluctuations that impact the consumer, the State established the Fund for the Stabilization of Prices of Fuels Derived from Petroleum (FEPC) through Supreme Decree No. 010-2004.
Fund operation and recent modifications
The Ministry of Energy and Mines administers the FEPC, defining its guidelines and mechanisms. In January 2024, through Supreme Decree No. 001-2024-EM, the criteria for establishing the price band for bottled LPG was modified, requiring the use of the import parity price (PPI) instead of the import parity price. export (PPE).
Price band update
Following these provisions, Osinergmin updated the fuel price band through Resolution No. 021-2024-OS/GRT of April 26. This update responds to the international situation and reflects the increase experienced between January and March.
