OPPO officially surpassed Samsung and Apple to take the top spot in the Vietnamese smartphone market in the second quarter of 2024.
Latest figures from Canalys show that OPPO has achieved impressive growth of up to 110% compared to the same period last year, capturing 27% of the market share, while Samsung holds 21%.
Apple, despite a 15% growth thanks to its aggressive retail and marketing strategy in Vietnam, still only ranked fourth with a 16% market share. This shows the fierce competition in the high-end smartphone segment, where OPPO and others are gradually taking market share from the long-standing giants.
OPPO’s rise comes not only from its strategy of diversifying its product portfolio with mid-range and high-end smartphones like Reno, but also from its ability to quickly respond to consumer demand amid a stable macroeconomic environment and positive market sentiment. Meanwhile, Samsung seems to have missed the opportunity to capture the mid-range segment – where OPPO has done very well.
Other smartphone makers also face challenges from currency fluctuations and price-sensitive consumers. To maintain their position, they will need to closely monitor the market and come up with appropriate strategies.
The Vietnamese smartphone market is expected to continue to be more vibrant in the last months of 2024. In particular, the shutdown of 2G waves in September will create a strong wave of conversion from old devices to 4G smartphones. This will open up great opportunities for companies like OPPO and Xiaomi to attract more consumers.
It is forecasted that sales of 4G feature phones and low-cost smartphones may grow dramatically in the final period of the year, especially when Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 16 generation in September. This will be one of the key product lines that will help dealers increase sales strongly, while reshaping the smartphone market picture in Vietnam in the near future.
