Only two weeks left to register for the European elections

After the election is before the election – in Luxembourg the saying since 2023 couldn’t be truer. Because Luxembourg has just had a super election year, with municipal and chamber elections. In 2024, the social elections continued on March 12th. Now that these are over, citizens are looking ahead to another election: the election of the EU Parliament on June 9th. On that day, EU citizens who live in Luxembourg and have registered to vote will decide which six MEPs will represent them in the EU Parliament for a five-year term.

As with the municipal elections, non-Luxembourgers are also allowed to vote in these European elections. You just need to be an EU citizen and resident in Luxembourg. However, anyone who wants to take part in the European elections in Luxembourg for the first time must keep a certain deadline in mind: April 15th, i.e. 55 days before the election. Until then, citizens from other EU member states who reside in Luxembourg must be registered on the electoral rolls.

In the 2019 European elections, only around 22,500 non-Luxembourgians were registered on the electoral rolls.

It is particularly important to note that the electoral rolls for the European elections and those for the municipal elections are two different ones. Anyone who has already registered for the 2023 municipal elections will have to repeat the procedure for the European elections.

The application for registration can be submitted electronically via Myguichet.lu or as an informal application to the municipality of residence. There are currently still two weeks left for this.

200,000 non-Luxembourgians are expected to vote in the European elections

In the 2019 European elections, only around 22,500 non-Luxembourgians were registered on the electoral rolls. According to Cefis (Centre d’Etude et de Formation Interculturelles et Sociales), the voter turnout of non-Luxembourgish EU citizens in the European elections in 2014 was only twelve percent. For comparison: around 50,000 non-Luxembourgians cast their votes in the 2023 municipal elections. That corresponded to around 20 percent of the foreign population in this country.

In Luxembourg, around 200,000 non-Luxembourgians would actually be entitled to vote in the European elections.
