Only half of my face is recognisable… ‘Spatial neglect’ also occurs after severe brain shock: Nate News

When one hemisphere of the brain is damaged due to a stroke, 58% of stroke patients and 38% of patients with traumatic brain injury suffer. This is called spatial neglect. For example, if a stroke occurs in the right side of the brain, the person may not be able to perceive as if there is an obstacle in the left side and attention will decrease.

For example, even if there is a person or object on the left, it will not be recognized. You can choose to dress only on the right side or to shave only the right side of your face. Even if you read a book, you cannot read the left page, but only the right one. People with this disorder may have difficulty orienting themselves and identifying objects.

Recently, new research has shown that similar symptoms occur not only in stroke but also in traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is what the health and medicine webzine ‘Health Day’ reported on the 28th (local time), based on an article by American researchers recently published in the journal Annals of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.

Researchers from the Kessler Foundation, an American nonprofit rehabilitation medicine research foundation, and Duke University monitored the symptoms of more than 3,600 stroke patients and 266 head trauma patients treated at 16 rehabilitation hospitals in the United States. The researchers explained that when spatial neglect occurs, “it can impair daily functioning, reduce the effectiveness of rehabilitation treatment, and lead to long-term disability after brain damage.”

The survey results showed that 58% of stroke patients and 38% of traumatic brain injury patients suffered from spatial neglect. Considering only stroke patients, it was found more often in those with damage to the right hemisphere (45%) than to the left (23%).

Fei Chen, a senior researcher at the Kessler Foundation who led the study, said: “This study demonstrates that screening for spatial neglect needs to be applied not only to stroke rehabilitation programs but also to traumatic brain injury rehabilitation programs “. “By expanding timely treatment for spatial neglect to patients with traumatic brain injury, we will be able to improve their rehabilitation outcomes, optimize their recovery, and reduce the burden on healthcare providers,” she emphasized.
