The exhibition will be led by José Manuel Romero, who is a Full Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alcalá, Spain. He is a founding member of the Society for Critical Theory Studies (SETC) and is part of the editorial board of the magazine Constelaciones. His publications include the edition of the volume “Immanente Kritik heute” (Transcript, 2014), the monograph “El lugar de la critique” (2016) and the book, written with Juan José Tamayo, “Ignacio Ellacuría. Theology, Philosophy and criticism of ideology” (2019) and “Recovering socialism. A debate with Axel Honneth” (2022).

José Manuel Romero’s presentation will deal with a central theme for social philosophy and for diagnoses of contemporary society: the relationship between the social definition of the possible and the horizon of social expectations. To do this, we will first address the question of whether it makes sense to talk about a definition of what is possible hegemonic in society and what factors determine it.

Next, based on the ideas of R. Koselleck, the content of the notion of social horizon of expectations and the dimensions that constitute it will be addressed. This will put us in a position to analyze the relationships that can occur between both instances and finally determine the current situation of our historical horizon of expectations with respect to the prevailing definition of the possible.

The hypothesis that will be defended is that since the 70s of the last century we have found ourselves in a situation of sinking the horizon of social expectations below what is institutionally and socially defined as possible. This has fundamental political and ideological implications.
