One year after his departure, the vallenato continues to cry the legend of Omar Gels

Today a year of the death of Omar Gels, one of the greatest exponents of the vallenato, whose sudden death, on May 21, 2024, left an irreparable emptiness in the music and heart of thousands of followers.

Gels, who was a talented accordion and prolific composer who left an indelible legacy in vallenato folklore, was founder of the Los Diablitos group and later of the people of Omar Gels, wrote dozens of successes that marked generations, including “the paths of life”, “I met him”, “as I pay my god” and “a blank sheet.”

Recently in the capital of Cesar, version 58 of the Vallenata Legend Festival was held in its tribute, in which the Foundation of the Vallenata Legend Festival was declared by “King of Kings posthumous”, through Agreement 01 of April 25, highlighting Omar Gels as one of the greatest exponents of the vallenato, not only as an interpreter of the accordion composer and producer.

“His contribution was invaluable for our folklore. Omar Gels dedicated his life to music, leaving a legacy that is still present in every corner of Colombia,” said the foundation during the event.

The death of the artist, which occurred at 57 due to cardiac arrest after a sports activity, caused shock throughout the country. A year later, his music is still alive on the radio, on stage and in the collective memory of a town that saw him born, grow and succeed. Omar Gels was not only an idol of the vallenato, he was a poet of the town, a storyteller who knew how to put melody to the deepest feelings of the coastal soul.

“He left the man, but his music stayed forever,” said one of his children on social networks today, remembering the artist with an unpublished photograph and a sense of gratitude.
