Around fourteen eyes, 700 missing pets, two human lives and preliminary damage estimated at 10 million euros. Here is the price of last New Year’s fireworks.
Despite convincing arguments like “it’s a tradition” and “they’re already taking everything away from us”; There is no other situation in this country where more deaths occur and people are maimed and the government fails to intervene.
But when it comes to having fun on New Year’s Eve, the Netherlands has a collective blind spot. MPs are undecided, mayors are too discouraged to intervene and journalists make suggestive reports about the purchase of fireworks.
The next day journalists enthusiastically quoted the director of the Rotterdam eye hospital as speaking of “another night of horror”. Clarify; that night we also kept alive an age-old tradition. And this tradition could cost the Netherlands several eyes, animal suffering and human lives.
We will honor the victims with some fireworks later this year.
